How do I set up eero with my Australian ISP?

eero works with Australian Internet Service Providers (ISPs) that use NBN (National Broadband Network) connections. Connect your gateway eero to your NBN connection box using an ethernet cable.

Most Australian homes connect to the internet through NBN hardware. The setup process depends on your NBN connection type.

What NBN connection type do I have?

There are four common NBN connection types in Australia. Each uses different hardware to deliver the internet to your home.

FTTP (Fibre to the Premises)

FTTP uses a fibre optic cable running directly to your home with an NBN box (ONT) installed on your wall.

How to identify FTTP:

  • NBN box mounted on wall

  • Fibre optic cable connects to wall socket

  • LED lights show: Power, Internet signal, Ethernet connection

Setup: Connect your gateway eero to the ethernet port on the NBN box.

FTTC (Fibre to the Curb)

FTTC connects your home to the internet through telephone lines (DSL cable). The NBN connection box connects to a telephone socket in your home.

How to identify FTTC:

  • NBN connection box with at least 4 LED lights (Power, Connection, LAN, DSL)

  • DSL cable runs from the box to a telephone socket

  • All LED lights must be solid for an active connection

Setup: Connect your gateway eero to the ethernet port on the NBN connection box.

FTTB (Fibre to the Building)

FTTB is common in apartment buildings. The primary NBN equipment is installed in a secure cabinet in your building's basement or communication room. From there, the connection reaches your apartment through existing copper or ethernet cables.

How to identify FTTB:

  • NBN connection box in your apartment

  • Connection delivered through building's existing cable infrastructure

  • May require building access to power cycle equipment

Setup: Connect your gateway eero to the ethernet port on the NBN connection box.

Note: You may need access to your building's communication room to power cycle the NBN equipment during setup.

HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial)

HFC uses existing cable TV infrastructure (such as Foxtel connections) to deliver your NBN connection.

How to identify HFC:

  • NBN connection box with at least 4 LED lights (Power, Upstream, Downstream, Online)

  • Coaxial cable connects to a wall outlet

  • Ethernet port available on the back of the box

  • All LED lights must be solid for an active connection

Setup: Connect your gateway eero to the ethernet port on the NBN connection box.

Do I need special settings for my ISP?

Some Australian ISPs require additional configuration during setup:

  • PPPoE username and password - Your ISP will provide these credentials

  • VLAN ID - Required by some providers for network identification

The eero App will prompt you for these details during setup if needed. Contact your ISP if you're unsure whether you need these settings.

What if my eero won't connect?

If your eero cannot connect to the internet:

  1. Check the LED lights on your NBN connection box - all lights should be solid, not flashing or off

  2. Power cycle your NBN box - unplug it for 30 seconds, then plug it back in

  3. Verify the ethernet cable is securely connected between your NBN box and gateway eero

  4. Contact your ISP if the NBN box lights indicate a connection problem

  5. Contact eero support if the NBN connection is working but eero cannot connect
